Carprofen Use

Purpose

The use of compounded (mixed or diluted) drugs in live animals must adhere to strict aseptic techniques during preparation and storage. Beyond-use dating and storage conditions (e.g., temperature, light protection) should generally follow manufacturer recommendations. In certain cases, dates beyond manufacturer recommendations for disposal date after opening are permitted when supported by published, peer-reviewed evidence demonstrating maintained sterility, stability, and efficacy. Such justification must be included in the IACUC protocol.

Carprofen has been shown to retain strength and sterility after opening for up to 60 days at room temperature and 180 days under refrigeration.1 This date should not exceed the expiration date on the stock vial set by the manufacturer.

Policy

Aseptic Technique: Aliquoting must be performed in a sterile manner using sterile equipment and vials.

Labeling: Always clearly label the new container with the drug name, concentration, date of preparation, and the expiration date.

Light Protection: Carprofen is sensitive to light. Always store aliquots in amber-colored vials or syringes protected from light exposure.

Visual Inspection: Before administering the medication, check for any cloudiness, discoloration, or sediment. If the solution looks compromised, discard it immediately.

Effective Dates:            June 4, 2026 to June 30, 2029

This policy has been approved by a majority vote of the IACUC
